Man charged in stabbing of Dollarama security guard

A man has been arrested in connection with the stabbing of a security guard at a Dollarama store in St. James on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred when the guard confronted a suspected shoplifter and sustained injuries to his "upper body" from a sharp-edged weapon. The suspect fled the scene with stolen items, leading to the security guard being hospitalized in stable condition.

Nelson Preston Sumner, 29, was taken into custody on Wednesday morning and charged with aggravated assault, robbery, and failing to comply with a probation order. Sumner had previously served an 18-month supervised probation for assaulting someone with a weapon in June 2025, as well as convictions for mischief and breaching court orders.

He was also previously sentenced to 180 days in jail for assaulting a peace officer and common assault. Dollarama representatives stated that they are cooperating fully with the authorities in their investigation and emphasized the priority they place on the safety and well-being of their employees, customers, and business partners.
