Maharashtra Govt Launches Statewide Sugar Stock Inspections To Curb Hoarding And Artificial Shortages

Mumbai, August 27, 2026: The Maharashtra government has initiated a comprehensive statewide inspection campaign aimed at curbing sugar hoarding and preventing artificial shortages that could lead to price hikes. The Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department has mandated a physical examination of sugar reserves held by sugar mills, traders, distributors, and significant industrial users. This initiative, following Central Government directives, will remain in effect until November 30, 2026.

Under the new regulations, traders and distributors, excluding government entities, are restricted to holding sugar stocks for a maximum of 30 days from the date of acquisition. They are further barred from keeping more than 4,000 quintals, or 400 metric tonnes, of sugar at any single time. Large industrial consumers, who require over 10 metric tonnes of sugar monthly for production or as a raw ingredient, will be limited to maintaining stock for no more than 15 days of their monthly usage.

To enforce these measures, the department has made registration on the food-stock monitoring portal obligatory for all entities involved in sugar trade. This includes sellers, distributors, and big consumers, who must register immediately and provide updates weekly on Fridays. Non-compliance, such as hiding stock or providing false information, will result in severe penalties under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, including criminal charges.

Special inspection units have been established at the district level to carry out on-site verifications at storage facilities. These teams, led by the District Supply Officer and comprising representatives from various government departments and law enforcement, will verify sugar stocks through physical counting and cross-referencing with purchase, sale, tax, and transport records.

Any discrepancies found between the declared and actual quantities, or violations of the set limits, will be documented with photographic evidence, and legal actions will be taken against the violators.

The government has issued a stern warning to traders and other stakeholders against hiding stocks or engaging in hoarding. They have emphasized that strict measures will be taken to safeguard consumers and maintain a stable sugar market.
