KNCHR opens applications for new CEO

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has launched a call for applications to fill the role of Commission Secretary/Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The position is open to qualified Kenyans and the deadline for submissions is September 22, 2026. Interested individuals must apply through the commission's recruitment portal.

The successful applicant will serve a five-year contract, with the potential for one renewal, and will be based in Nairobi with some travel required. The CEO will report to the Commission's Chairperson and oversee the Secretariat. They will also serve as the Accounting Officer and Authorized Officer.

Applicants must be Kenyan citizens with a degree from a recognized Kenyan university. At least 10 years of proven management experience is required, along with a relevant master's degree and at least five years' experience in senior management roles. Additional qualifications include experience in human rights, governance, public administration, management, finance, or political science.

The CEO will provide strategic leadership, implement KNCHR's mandate, policies, and strategic plan, and oversee the day-to-day operations of the Commission. They will implement annual work plans, lead institutional development, and manage partnerships and resource mobilisation. The position also involves financial management, including budget preparation, financial statements, and internal controls.

The successful candidate will ensure compliance with the Public Finance Management framework and other applicable laws. They will also strengthen staff capacity, oversee performance management, and promote good governance, integrity, and professionalism within the institution.

KNCHR expects the CEO to represent the Commission before various stakeholders and promote the Commission's human rights mandate. Applicants must submit a signed application letter, CV with contact details for at least three referees, certified copies of academic and professional certificates, a valid identification document, and copies of relevant clearance certificates.

The application should be addressed to the Commission's Chairperson and submitted online through the recruitment portal using the reference "COMMISSION SECRETARY/CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER". KNCHR will only contact shortlisted candidates and warns against providing false information or forged documents. They stress they do not engage recruitment agents or charge any fees during the recruitment process.
