Kenyatta Avenue–Upper Hill viaduct update: Construction enters key phase

The construction of the Kenyatta Avenue–Upper Hill Viaduct in Nairobi has moved into the superstructure phase. Precast concrete girders are currently being installed to construct the elevated roadway. The project, overseen by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), aims to offer an alternate route over some of Nairobi's congested intersections, connecting the Central Business District and Upper Hill.

Kenyan state official Raymond Omollo highlighted the significance of this development, stating that robust and dependable transport infrastructure forms the bedrock of a contemporary city, facilitating seamless movement of individuals and enterprises, fostering economic activity, and influencing urban growth. He emphasized that this efficient transportation system will enable people and businesses to traverse the city seamlessly, bolster economic activity, and shape the city's evolution.

The viaduct is designed to bypass several busy intersections during peak hours, providing motorists with a ramp to access the viaduct and continue along the Kenyatta Avenue extension. The route will traverse above Processional Way, Mamlaka Road, and Nyerere Road before passing All Saints’ Cathedral, ultimately terminating near the Integrity Centre on Jakaya Kikwete Road.

This route should allow smooth traffic flow towards Ngong Road and Valley Road. The project is anticipated to reshape daily commutes for people traveling between the CBD and Upper Hill, especially during periods of heavy traffic at existing intersections. During construction, reinforced concrete piers and pier caps have been completed to support the elevated section.

Now, precast girders are being positioned across these piers, forming the main structural components that will carry the roadway. Additionally, the viaduct will house pedestrian walkways and cycle lanes alongside the elevated road. Peds will have designated walkways, while cyclists will have separate lanes. The overarching goal is to enhance safety and reliability of movement within Nairobi for all road users, including residents, businesses, and visitors, enabling them to navigate the city confidently and participate fully in the city's round-the-clock economy.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is supporting the project through security coordination, road safety awareness, and protection of crucial public infrastructure. Ultimately, the effectiveness of the new route in reducing delays, improving connections between the CBD and Upper Hill, and providing safer options for pedestrians and cyclists will be the key indicators of its impact on Nairobi residents.
