Iranian security chief says US must ‘fulfil Iran’s conditions’ to open Strait of Hormuz

Qatar has urged Iran to resume negotiations over reopening the Strait of Hormuz, according to a day of high-level talks in Tehran. The Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, engaged in discussions with Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

The talks aimed to revive a stalled diplomatic track amid ongoing tensions and US sanctions on Iran. Qatar has been a key mediator between the two nations throughout the conflict, playing a direct role in securing the June ceasefire that briefly halted hostilities. The prime minister emphasized the necessity of dialogue as the best way to address differences and avoid further escalation in the region.

Both sides remain at odds over control of the strategically important strait, which Tehran has used as leverage and through which a fifth of the world's oil supplies pass. The White House stated that no meaningful negotiations are currently taking place as Iran has not come to the table, while Iran has repeatedly claimed it has never left the negotiating table.
