Iran will defeat enemy in ‘full-scale economic war’, Ghalibaf says

A public dispute has emerged between hardline Iran Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and hardliner Hossein Shariatmadari, exposing growing divisions within Iran's regime over how to respond to the ongoing war with the US. The conflict centers on the future of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy supply chokepoint. Shariatmadari, appointed by former supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei, warned Ghalibaf that western-orientated groups and reformists were misinterpreting his recent comments on negotiations, suggesting his base was drifting from revolutionary forces.

Ghalibaf responded in a two-page open letter, rejecting the notion that negotiation amounted to a retreat from the principles of resistance, stating that its purpose is to advance national interests and secure Iran's rights. The exchange highlights a broader debate within Iran's regime about the country's next steps as the conflict shifts from military action to diplomatic efforts.

US President Trump's recent shift towards economic pressure has heightened the stakes surrounding Iran's leverage over the Strait of Hormuz, where attacks have kept shipping traffic near a standstill. Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has urged Tehran to seek an end to the war while still in a position of power and dignity. Meanwhile, Iran's Supreme National Security Council head Mohsen Rezaei has taken a tougher stance, warning that if the economic war persists, no oil will be exported.

Diplomatic efforts are underway, with Qatar's Prime Minister in Tehran to discuss de-escalation and restoring diplomatic channels, as well as restoring pre-war conditions in the Strait of Hormuz.
