Instagram to warn parents if teens spark suicide fears

Meta has introduced a new alert system on Instagram for parents in Hong Kong, aimed at alerting them when their teenagers repeatedly search for content related to suicide or self-harm. This feature was showcased during a forum focusing on empowering parents to ensure digital safety for their children, ahead of the upcoming school year.

The system will roll out gradually to teenager accounts, which span users aged 13 to 17. Parents will be notified via email, text message, WhatsApp, or within the app itself if their teen repeatedly searches for terms related to self-harm or suicide. Notifications will include options for parents to access resources to help them discuss these sensitive topics with their teenagers.

This initiative complements Meta's existing policies that prohibit content promoting suicide or self-harm. Philip Chua, Meta's Asia-Pacific policy director for products, emphasized the company's commitment to ensuring that all content on Facebook and Instagram is age-appropriate, aligning with a 13-plus rating standard. The platform already sends reminders to limit screen time and allows parents to set custom blocks or limits.

While users can share personal stories, such posts are concealed from teens. Meta blocks searches for harmful terms and redirects users to local support services. The company also notifies emergency services when an imminent risk of physical harm is detected.
