India to get widespread rainfall over the week: IMD

Several parts of India are expected to receive widespread rain over the coming week, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The south-west monsoon remains active across much of the country, with southwest, central, eastern and northeastern regions likely to see significant rainfall. Odisha in eastern India may get isolated heavy-to-very heavy rainfall from August 28-31, while Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand could experience isolated heavy rainfall during the same period.

North-west, central and north-east India are also likely to receive fairly widespread to widespread rain over the course of the week. In north-west India, Uttarakhand may receive widespread rainfall from August 28 to September 2, while Himachal Pradesh could get similar showers from August 30 to September 2. Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and adjoining areas may see widespread rainfall on August 31 and September 1.

In central India, Chhattisgarh is expected to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall throughout August 28-September 2. East Madhya Pradesh is anticipated to witness such rainfall during September 29-30 and again on September 1. In the northeast, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to experience widespread rainfall through September 2.

Assam and Meghalaya may see widespread rainfall during September 29-31. Rainfall in southern India is expected to remain largely isolated to scattered across Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and neighboring regions. Kerala and Lakshadweep are likely to see widespread rainfall during August 28-30, while Coastal Karnataka could get widespread showers through September 2.

The prolonged rain could increase the risk of localized flooding, waterlogging and disruption in vulnerable areas.
