India Beat Germany 3-1 To Secure Fifth Place At Women's Hockey World Cup

Amstelveen, Netherlands - India's women's hockey team delivered an impressive second-half performance to defeat Germany 3-1 and claim fifth place at the FIH Women's Hockey World Cup 2026 at the Wagener Stadium on Thursday. This marked India's best finish in the tournament since their fourth-place position in the inaugural 1974 edition. India secured the spot after losing only one game throughout the event.

The Indian team entered the classification match after a single loss. However, Germany dominated much of the first half, keeping India's attackers on edge. India's coach, Sjoerd Marijne, expressed satisfaction with the result but acknowledged that he desired better outcomes.

Neither team managed to score in the opening two quarters, with Germany creating more scoring opportunities and increasing their chances in front of the goal. Indian goalkeeper Bichu Devi and the defense held strong during this period.

Vinesh Phogat, an Indian player, responded to Germany's pressure with a strong showing in the second half. In the 43rd minute, she scored the first goal for India with a well-executed reverse-lift finish while making a significant run into the circle. Navneet Kaur leveraged this opportunity, converting her team's first penalty corner in the 44th minute, to give India a two-goal lead.

While Germany managed to reduce the deficit through Lynn Krings in the 59th minute, India maintained their lead and delivered a remarkable display in the third quarter. Navneet Kaur continued her impressive performance by scoring her second goal in the 47th minute, calmly lifting the ball beyond the goalkeeper to create a three-goal cushion for India.

Germany managed to score once more in the 59th minute following a rebound, but India held their nerve in the final moments to secure the 3-1 victory and finish fifth in the FIH Women's Hockey World Cup.
