IEBC hits back at Gachagua over claims of election technology tender

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has vehemently refuted allegations of corruption, political interference, and voter suppression associated with preparations for the 2027 General Election. IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon stated that the commission, properly constituted, is dedicated to its constitutional mandate ahead of the scheduled poll.

He dismissed claims questioning the appointment of current commissioners, asserting that the process was public and subjected to judicial review, which upheld its legitimacy. The commission challenged Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua to provide evidence backing his allegations that politicians had purchased a house for IEBC chairperson Ethekon to influence his decisions.

IEBC demanded location details, transaction documents, and evidence from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission. The commission also rejected allegations of misconduct against Ethekon and Vice Chairperson, noting such claims were unsubstantiated during the Magarini by-election last year. The IEBC highlighted ongoing scrutiny over the procurement of technology and ballot papers, stating two major tenders have been halted after review requests.

The commission clarified that these tenders are being conducted in line with constitutional provisions and regulations, with documents available on the IEBC's website and the Public Procurement Information Portal. It further denied plans to manipulate the voter register, assuring Kenyans that the register remains under IEBC's exclusive custody, with stringent measures to prevent tampering.
