Hong Kong to launch free AI courses with tech giants Google, Microsoft for SMEs

The Hong Kong government has announced a free AI course initiative in partnership with tech giants Google and Microsoft, aimed at boosting the adoption of artificial intelligence in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The "AI for All" program, part of the HK$50 million (US$6.38 million) initiative, focuses on industries such as education, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and logistics, as SMEs make up the majority of the city's businesses and are crucial for economic development.

Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong emphasized the importance of helping SMEs transform and upgrade through AI to enhance competitiveness.

Deputy chairman Emil Yu Chen-on highlighted that the courses aim to turn AI into productivity and competitiveness, offering actionable, replicable, and expandable AI application areas tailored to various industries. The program, led by Hong Kong's two tech hubs Cyberport and Hong Kong Science Park, will host over 200 activities over two years, benefiting around 50,000 people.

The council will focus on practical applications of generative AI, including content creation, data analysis, and workflow efficiency, as well as AI application development and integration into real business scenarios.

The courses will also cover human resources and leadership to address AI talent management and application trends, preparing organizations for future workforce needs. The "AI BiteClass" will be accessible to elderly residents and underprivileged communities. The council's "AI with HKPC – Business Empowerment" program began at the Hong Kong Computer and Communications Festival last week, with future courses details yet to be announced.

Instructors will come from diverse industries with AI project and solution development experience, including Google, Microsoft, Tencent, Huawei, Amazon Web Services, and others. The council will provide free one-on-one consultations to help SMEs maximize government funding and identify suitable schemes and applications, with most courses held in Kowloon Tong and some online through the government "iAM Smart" system.
