No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
On Wednesday evening, Haryanvi singer and YouTuber Ankit Balyan, 32, was fatally shot in a targeted attack outside a gym in Shamli district. Preliminary reports suggest the assailants fired approximately 18 rounds at the victim. Around 7 pm, the attackers arrived on two motorcycles and opened fire as Balyan exited the gym and approached his Scorpio SUV.
Four gunmen allegedly waited outside the gym, with Balyan attempting to protect himself by moving towards the passenger side of the SUV, as a wall obstructed the driver's side. Five bullets struck Balyan - five in the head and abdomen, and three impacting the SUV's front windshield. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, the singer was declared dead upon arrival.
The attackers fled the scene, prompting police to swiftly investigate. Additional Director General of Police Bhanu Bhaskar and Superintendent of Police M P Singh arrived in Shamli to lead the probe. Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the gym and nearby locations to identify the perpetrators and reconstruct the incident. Authorities are also exploring a potential connection to Haryana and probing the motive of the killing.
Balyan's family, supporters, and villagers protested the murder, blocking the nearby Delhi-Muzaffarnagar Road in demand of justice. The incident has sparked conversations about the law-and-order situation in Uttar Pradesh, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav condemning the act and urging an investigation into the possibility of political rivalry.
