FSU football positional battles ahead of the 2026 season

Florida State football added over 55 new players this offseason, creating uncertainty in numerous positions. Two critical areas, the offensive line and defensive backs, require the coaching staff to establish a clear plan before the Seminoles face New Mexico State University on August 29. The offensive line's starting lineup has been entirely replaced by five transfers, with additional returners also vying for spots.

Senior left tackle Xavier Chaplin and senior offensive lineman Bradyn Welch-Joiner have the highest chances of securing two positions, with Chaplin transferring from Auburn University and Welch-Joiner from Purdue University. Redshirt senior Nate Pabst, who brings the most experience with 38 career starts at Bowling Green State University, joins the tight competition.

Sophomore interior offensive lineman Paul Bowling, who started all 12 games at Troy University as a freshman, may face more patience from the coaching staff due to his remaining eligibility. Defensive back defensive coordinator Tony White starts five defenders, including two cornerbacks, two safeties, and a versatile "rover." Cornerback Ja’Bril Rawls and senior defensive back Quindarrius Jones have the best chances to start, with Jones likely to play a significant role due to his strong performances at Duke in 2025.

Safety safety coach Evan Cooper highlighted senior K.J. Kirkland as the most reliable player, alongside redshirt sophomore CJ Richard Jr. and sophomore Ma'Khi Jones in a three-way race for the remaining spot.
