For everything from troubled hearts to lost keys, Greeks bake cakes for a wish-granting saint

For many in need, Greece's Orthodox Christian calendar offers a special day to seek comfort, with a simple orange-flavored cake as the offering. Thousands of pilgrims gathered at the Church of St. Fanourios, near Athens, on Wednesday to share their baked creations, hoping for relief from personal losses. Priests blessed the cakes, which were then distributed among attendees during a feast celebrating St. Fanourios, the patron saint of lost-and-found.

Among the attendees was 66-year-old Maria Chanioti, who shared that people turn to St. Fanourios for help with heartache and other troubles. The cake, known as Fanouropita, varies in family recipes but includes ingredients like golden and black raisins, cinnamon, walnuts, and orange juice. Father Nikolaos Vlavianos, who blessed the cakes, emphasized that the spiritual significance lies in the sincerity of the request, not the monetary value of the wish.
