Finance minister presents Colombia’s $203B budget proposal

Colombia's Finance Minister Miguel Gomez unveiled a budget proposal of COP634.9 trillion ($203 billion) for the upcoming fiscal year, marking a 14% rise from the previous year. This significant increase is primarily attributed to the nation's mounting debt obligations, which surged by 55% to 155.4 trillion ($49.8 billion), nearly constituting a quarter of the entire budget.

During a press presentation, Gomez informed reporters that an earthquake that had left thousands homeless in western Colombia earlier this month had necessitated additional spending from the administration of Abelardo de la Espriella. In a video message, the finance minister also stated that the government "has taken deci" (the recording is incomplete due to the brief nature of the source material).

The budget bill, an updated version of the one proposed by the prior government of former President Gustavo Petro, must secure approval from Congress by October 20 or be enacted as a decree. Additionally, the government will unveil a Finance Bill detailing its spending plans before December.
