Fat banking: Benefits, risks and what patients should know

Dubai: The concept of storing a patient's own fat for potential future cosmetic use is gaining traction, but a Dubai-based surgeon warns that this "fat banking" technique is still in its early stages. Dr. Simon Ivanov, an endoscopic facelift, breast, and body surgeon, explains that the process involves removing fat, freezing it, and preserving it for later use.

However, he stresses that the long-term viability and reliability of stored fat remains uncertain. Unlike traditional fat grafting, which involves immediate re-injection, fat banking introduces an additional freezing and storage phase, which can impact the tissue's cellular integrity. Ivanov notes that while results can be achieved, frozen and thawed fat often does not match the consistency and quality of fresh grafts.

The main appeal of fat banking is convenience, as patients could theoretically have their own tissue available for future procedures without undergoing liposuction again. However, Ivanov cautions that this convenience should not be mistaken for a guaranteed long-term solution. He points out that while complications are generally rare when performed by experienced surgeons, risks such as reduced graft take, partial resorption, and fat necrosis can increase if processing or storage conditions are not optimal.

Another emerging option is the use of fat-derived extracellular matrix or scaffold-based injectables, but Ivanov notes that these products are expensive and lack extensive long-term data. Additionally, the growing trend of weight-loss drugs may influence some patients to consider fat banking, but Ivanov reminds them that stored fat does not guarantee the restoration of pre-weight-loss contours due to variable biological responses.

Despite Dubai's dynamic aesthetic market, Ivanov suggests that fat banking remains a niche, premium option rather than a mainstream breakthrough. He advises patients to ask about the real-world outcomes of frozen fat compared to fresh fat, the processing and storage methods used, and the availability of alternative procedures before making a decision.
