Elachi defends Ruto, challenges opposition to use ballot to remove him in 2027

Dagoretti North Member of Parliament Beatrice Elachi has defended President William Ruto, urging his critics to resort to the ballot if they wish to remove him from office during the 2027 General Election. In an interview with K24 TV on Thursday, August 27, 2026, Elachi urged Kenyans not to bear the political burdens that do not belong to them, asserting that Ruto was elected by Kenyans and subsequently accepted as president.

"I want to tell Kenyans, don’t carry a burden that was never yours. It was never our burden. We accepted the president because he won, didn’t we?" Elachi stated. The ODM Party member, elected in 2022, explained that the party had taken a political stance that its members continued to adhere to. "I am from ODM. Where was it my burden?

She emphasized that the ODM had settled on its political position and proceeded accordingly, insisting that party members remained committed to following the party’s guidance. The former speaker also expressed the importance of peace and stability for citizens to carry out their daily tasks and contribute to the nation's growth. "What we want in Kenya is a country where you wake up in the morning and come and do your work. It’s a country where I want to wake up," she said.

Elachi challenged Ruto's opponents to devise a viable political strategy to unseat him, insisting that the ballot is the legitimate means to alter the government. "Plan. Plan how to do it right and do it in the right way, and use the ballot to remove him," she asserted. Her comments came as political parties and opposition coalitions ramp up their preparations for the 2027 General Election, with alliances and potential presidential contenders sparking public discussions.
