Congress MP Shashi Tharoor Praises India's Response To Gen Z Protest, Calls Democracy 'Flexible' And 'Self-Correcting'

Mumbai, August 27, 2026 - Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has commended India's handling of the recent Gen Z-led student protest, asserting that it highlighted the nation's adaptable and responsive democratic system. During an NDTV event, Tharoor drew parallels between India's situation and youth-led protests across South Asia, noting that the country's system showed an ability to adjust to public pressure without the upheaval experienced elsewhere in the region.

Tharoor particularly praised the government's decision to accept students' demand for a major resignation following the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. He remarked that while the system "bent," it "didn't break," pointing to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan as evidence of this adaptability. Comparing India's response to protests in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal, Tharoor highlighted how the outcomes differed based on the political systems and government attitudes towards public dissent.

In Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, Tharoor noted, rulers were forced to step down, whereas in Nepal, the government changed but its structures remained intact. In Pakistan, the military established a puppet government, and in Myanmar, the military took control. Tharoor characterized India's mechanism as "self-correcting," emphasizing that its democratic system swiftly absorbed public pressure without the political turmoil seen in other South Asian countries.

Tharoor described India's response as evidence that the country's democratic institutions can effectively adapt to public demands, presenting it as a tribute to the Indian system's ability to remain flexible and responsive. He highlighted the BJP government's unexpected willingness to respond to public demands for resignations, contrasting this with previous instances where the Opposition's demands had gone unheeded.

Tharoor expressed optimism about India's democratic flexibility, stating that the government's response demonstrated that the system was capable of turning "bent but not broken."

However, Tharoor's comments also contained a note of criticism directed at the Congress party. He reflected on the youth protest led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which had raised similar issues to those highlighted by the Congress through its student outreach program, Chhatron ki Goonj. Tharoor questioned whether the Congress had failed to listen effectively or had missed the pulse of Gen Z concerns.

He suggested that the party needed to examine why an independent youth-led movement garnered a government response that its own outreach efforts could not.

The remarks underscore a challenge for the Congress party: raising critical issues does not automatically translate into connecting with the young people affected by those issues. Tharoor's questions suggest that the party must investigate why it could not achieve the same level of engagement as the independent youth-led movement, highlighting the need for the Congress to improve its outreach strategies to better resonate with its younger constituents.
