Brazil’s Dos Santos, American Russell race to world hurdles records in Zurich

Brazil's Alison dos Santos and American Masai Russell shattered world records at the Diamond League meeting in Zurich on Thursday. Dos Santos claimed victory in the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 45.80 seconds, surpassing Karsten Warholm's Olympic record of 45.94. The Brazilian surged ahead off the final bend and dominated the home straight, with Warholm finishing in 46.69.

Later, Olympic champion Russell delivered a record-breaking performance in the women's 100m hurdles, completing the race in 12.09 seconds, breaking the previous mark set by Nigeria's Tobi Amusan in 2022. Dos Santos, who has been close to breaking records for years, expressed his excitement and gratitude, acknowledging Warholm's brilliance.

Meanwhile, home favorite Audrey Werro powered to victory in the women's 800m race with a time of 1:53.70, bringing her within 0.42 seconds of the 43-year-old world record held by Czechoslovakian Jarmila Kratochvilova. The event also highlighted the growing strength of the women's 800m discipline, with double world hurdles champion Femke Broeders-Bol finishing second in a personal best time of 1:54.71.
