Braves predicted to release disappointing $42M Silver Slugger, All-Star, 14-year veteran

The Atlanta Braves are set to release Jurickson Profar, the $42 million Silver Slugger, All-Star, and 14-year veteran, following yet another positive performance-enhancing drug test. Initially signed by the Braves two winters ago, Profar was expected to be a valuable addition to their lineup, particularly in left field, which had long been a problem area for the team. However, Profar's tenure with the Braves has been anything but successful.

In his first season with the team, Profar was suspended for violating MLB's performance-enhancing drug policy after testing positive for Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG), a substance that is in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Despite the initial disappointment, the Braves initially believed the situation was isolated. However, Profar was suspended for the entirety of the next season after yet another positive test.

This brings to a conclusion a 162-game suspension for Profar, resulting in him forfeiting the entirety of his $15 million salary. With Profar having barely played during his time with the Braves, the organization now faces a significant decision regarding the final year of his contract. Sports Talk ATL's Chase Irle believes that Atlanta will ultimately release Profar, stating that left field is a position in dire need of improvement for the Braves.

The organization should send a message by cutting Profar this offseason, allowing them to explore their options in free agency and find a legitimate power bat to strengthen their lineup.
