Bill Gates Proposes Major Limits On AI Development

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates suggested on Wednesday that substantial restrictions on artificial intelligence development are essential, otherwise the drawbacks for humans could outweigh any potential benefits. In a 6,000-word essay titled "The turbulent AI era is here," Gates warned that artificial intelligence could either serve as the greatest equalizer ever invented or the worst source of injustice.

Gates emphasized that the decisions made during this era are critical, stating that the transition to the new AI era will be one of the most turbulent periods in human history. He expressed concern that there is no adequate plan to ease the entry into the AI era, as leaders, experts, and communities seem to be inadequately addressing the challenges.

Gates acknowledged that AI could bring significant benefits in fields such as agriculture and medicine, including breakthroughs in preventing and treating diseases. However, he also highlighted the substantial risks associated with the rapid advancement of AI, including widespread unemployment, harm to children's educational and social development, and the potential for criminals and bad actors to exploit AI or AI itself to cause deliberate harm.

He warned that as AI models become more powerful, they might act against our interests and we could lose control. Gates stated that these significant risks must be controlled quickly. In an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper, he expressed shock at the rapid pace of AI development, noting that these models are now capable of posing cyberattack, bioterrorism, and psychosocial risks.

Gates proposed taxing AI or robots as if they were human employees to slow the shift away from using human labor and to set aside some work for humans only. He urged leaders to act now to ensure that AI benefits everyone and to collaborate with other governments to tackle this national and global challenge.
