Berglandmilch in talks over “merger” with Austrian rival

Berglandmilch, Austria's largest dairy business, is in discussions for a potential merger with its Austrian rival, Obersteirische Molkerei. The cooperative, which employs around 1,500 people, markets products under brands such as Schärdinger, Desserta, and Tirol Milch. In 2024, Berglandmilch generated €1.3 billion in revenue, supplied by 8,000 farmers. The company operates nine processing sites.

Obersteirische Molkerei, also a cooperative, has three dairy factories located in Knittelfeld, Spielberg, and Kapfenberg. With over 600 employees, the co-op reported revenue of €374 million in 2024. In July, Berglandmilch announced plans to invest in production to cater to Austria's rapidly growing dairy market. The company is expanding its capacity at its Aschbach site in the north of the country, with the project expected to be completed by January.

This expansion will allow the facility to produce 15,000 tons of quark and 7,000 tons of cream cheese annually.
