Babar Azam Calls on Senior Players to Step Up in 2nd Pakistan vs England Test

Pakistan captain Babar Azam has urged senior players to assume greater responsibility and lead the team as they prepare for the crucial second Test against England at Lord's from August 27 to 31. Pakistan suffered a devastating innings-and-103-run loss in the opening Test, missing the presence of Babar Azam who did not play. The visitors now require a robust response to retain competitive standing in the series.

The Green Shirts had previously drawn their away series against the West Indies 1-1, but their performance in the first Test against England drew widespread criticism over their batting and bowling tactics. Pakistan has some confidence following their successful performances at Lord's in their last two Tests. The third and final Test of the series is scheduled for Birmingham next month.

Babar Azam, who is set to recover to 90 percent fitness ahead of the second Test, emphasized that experienced players must take greater responsibility, especially when the team is under pressure. He dismissed claims that Mohammad Rizwan, the wicketkeeper-batter, is bearing an additional burden, while acknowledging that senior players hold a greater responsibility to perform.

Babar stressed that while emerging players should showcase their potential, senior members must step up and aid the team in difficult scenarios. The fast-bowling attack has also faced criticism for underperforming in the opening Test, with Mohammad Abbas, Khurram Shahzad, and Mohammad Ali managing only five wickets while conceding 300 runs.

Babar Azam, however, stated that the responsibility should not solely lie on the bowlers, urging the entire playing XI to contribute. "Responsibility should be collectively pursued by the entire playing XI; it is not just that the bowlers have to take 20 wickets; batsmen are also supposed to score runs," he added. The Pakistan captain highlighted the significance of building partnerships in English conditions, particularly in batting, where established players must look to extend partnerships as newcomers might find it challenging to settle.

Pakistan has yet to finalize their playing XI for the Lord's Test, with Babar indicating that final decisions will be made after evaluating the pitch. He hinted at minimal changes, retaining Salman Ali Agha as Pakistan’s second spin option. The captain also confirmed that in-form Abdullah Shafique will continue batting at No. 3, noting his familiar position in domestic cricket and consistent performance since rejoining the side.

Babar Azam responded to recent criticism surrounding Pakistan, asserting that the team often excels when facing pressure. "Whenever we face a situation like this, we step up as a team. We play a different brand of cricket, and this time, you'll see something different from us," he remarked.
