Azizulhasni tells authorities: 'Want me for LA28 or I'll walk away'

Cycling champion Azizulhasni Awang may abandon future international competitions and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics should Malaysian authorities fail to make him an integral part of their Olympic strategy. The 38-year-old cyclist, who holds five Olympic medals, has expressed his willingness to retire from the sport if the government's intentions remain unclear.

Azizulhasni emphasized that his career decision is not personal, but rather whether the government sees his continued participation as essential to Malaysia's Olympic goals. The cyclist stated that the government's only public stance is a willingness to support him if he decides to continue racing. This comes after Youth and Sports Minister Dr Taufiq Johari mentioned the government would decide his fate following the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, where officials will evaluate requirements beyond financial aspects.

Taufiq also revealed that a formal Road to Gold offer letter has yet to be extended to Azizulhasni, despite ongoing negotiations aimed at reaching a mutually beneficial agreement. For the cyclist, the ongoing uncertainty directly impacts his immediate schedule, including participation in the Asian Games and World Championships. These events serve as crucial milestones in the Olympic qualification process.

Azizulhasni admitted that retiring after achieving success at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games was a possibility, but he remains open to remaining active if the government commits to his future role in Malaysian cycling.
