Atletico’s board rules out Alvarez move to Barca

Atletico Madrid's Board of Directors has firmly rejected any transfer talks between the club and Barcelona regarding their forward Julian Alvarez. The statement, released on Thursday, came after Barcelona president Joan Laporta had earlier expressed interest in signing the 26-year-old, who helped Argentina secure the 2022 World Cup.

Alvarez, who signed with Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 on a six-year deal, has been linked with a move to Barcelona due to fan criticism and speculation about his future. During the 2026 World Cup, Alvarez stated that he had discussed a potential transfer to Madrid club, Real Madrid, to realize his dream. Atletico reiterated their stance, emphasizing that the club's previous communication about Barca's failure to meet transfer requirements stands and that there will be no negotiations.

The club's decision stems from concerns beyond monetary aspects, focusing on Alvarez's dignity. Laporta, however, maintained that Barcelona's interest would persist until the transfer window closes if Atletico decides to sell Alvarez. Spanish media have also connected Alvarez to a possible move to Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Atletico expressed confidence that Alvarez will understand the decision and continue contributing to the team's objectives during his time at the club.
