Analysis:Meta's social media settlement leaves its money machine unscathed

Meta Platforms avoided a major legal battle in the U.S. by agreeing to pay up to $18 billion over a decade and impose restrictions on teenagers using its platforms. The settlement, which resolved claims that Meta designed Facebook and Instagram to addict children, does not affect the company's core business. Despite being one of the largest settlements paid by a technology firm, it is unlikely to impact Meta's profitability significantly as the company generated over $60 billion in revenue last year.

The agreement removes a substantial regulatory hurdle and allows Meta to avoid a potentially lengthy trial, preventing the exposure of more internal documents about its handling of young users. This outcome delighted investors, who saw Meta's share price increase by around 1 percent, compared to the $1.4 trillion in penalties initially sought by the states.

The settlement also puts pressure on social media rivals, such as TikTok, YouTube, and Snapchat, to make similar concessions, with about 30 percent of the payout contingent on such commitments.
