AI could make many jobs disappear forever, Bill Gates warns

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) could lead to a series of disruptive changes and job losses in the coming years. In a lengthy essay on his Gates Notes website, Gates argued that governments, businesses, and societies need to act now to prepare for the challenges ahead.

Gates believes that AI could either act as a powerful equalizer, reducing inequality, or it could exacerbate existing divides between the rich and poor, depending on how the technology is managed. He warned that the transition to an AI-driven era would be one of the most turbulent periods in human history, and that current preparations are inadequate.

He identified widespread job losses as one of the major risks associated with the AI transition, noting that entry- and mid-level workers are particularly vulnerable. While new jobs created by AI would likely require skills that take years to acquire, many jobs will disappear forever. Gates identified jobs in sales and customer support, software engineering, and paralegal work as those most at risk, but added that the disruption would eventually reach blue-collar workers as robotics advances.

Gates warned that the combination of AI and robotics could lead to a faster pace of job displacement as companies seek to cut costs. Unless intervention is taken, he warned, there could be fewer good jobs available, and the benefits of AI would accrue to a small group of people.

In addition to job losses, Gates raised concerns about the potential for AI to be used for malicious purposes, such as cyberattacks, fraud, disinformation, deepfakes, surveillance, and bioterrorism. He warned that critical infrastructure, such as hospitals, financial institutions, water systems, power grids, and government benefit systems, could become increasingly vulnerable to AI-enabled attacks.

Gates also highlighted the potential for AI systems to behave in ways that their creators did not intend, as the technology improves faster than expected and in surprising ways. He urged societies to consider a fundamental change in how we think about work, income, and economic security in the face of AI-driven disruption.
