Accra Sports Stadium is a death trap – NSA board chairman warns

National Sports Authority (NSA) Board Chairman Prof. Fred Awaah has expressed grave concerns over the deteriorating condition of the Accra Sports Stadium. During an inspection on August 26, which involved NSA officials, members of the Ghana Sports Fund and government representatives, Prof. Awaah warned that the facility could pose a significant safety risk if its structural issues are not urgently addressed.

He cautioned that the stadium, if left unchecked, could collapse, particularly during large events. Prof. Awaah stated, "That's just a death trap. You never know when the entire place will collapse; maybe with a big population, where we will have another disaster." Despite previous renovations in 2018 and 2007, undertaken to prepare for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations respectively, the latest inspection has reignited concerns about the stadium's safety and its capacity to host major sporting events.

The Accra Sports Stadium, one of Ghana's principal sporting venues and approved by CAF to host Category A matches, is now expected to undergo enhanced rehabilitation efforts to meet the necessary safety standards and international benchmarks as Ghana prepares for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
