The Haenam region has experienced over 70 small earthquakes this month alone. An expert says, "The frequency of earthquakes will likely decrease after reaching a peak." A series of small earthquakes have been occurring in the Haenam region of South Jeolla Province. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, as of 8 a.m. on the 16th, a total of 78 earthquakes have been recorded in the Haenam area this month. The largest earthquake was a 3.5-magnitude quake that occurred on the 12th, and there have been 17 aftershocks from that earthquake. Experts say that the recent earthquakes in Haenam are likely due to the movement of magma or gas underground. Seismic activity began to increase in Haenam in April 2021, and there have been approximately 1,500 earthquakes in the area over the past two years. Kim Young-seo, a senior researcher at the Korea Meteorological Administration, said, "The frequency of earthquakes will likely decrease after reaching a peak." He added, "We are continuously monitoring the situation as there is the possibility of a larger earthquake occurring."
