2027: IPCR boss urges youths to shun hate speech, fake news

Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, Director-General of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, has called on Nigerian youths to abstain from hate speech, false information, and intolerance as the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections. During a two-day training program for National Youth Service Corps members, Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme participants, interns, and volunteers, Ochogwu highlighted the necessity of equipping these young individuals with conflict management, leadership, and fact-checking skills.

He emphasized that young Nigerians should transition from merely benefiting from peacebuilding initiatives to actively participating in conflict prevention and resolution. Ochogwu stressed the importance of understanding the connections between government policy and its implementation, enabling participants to engage in constructive conversations.

The training program aims to expose participants to emerging threats related to misinformation, disinformation, and mal-information, especially in the lead-up to the 2027 elections. Ochogwu also stressed the need for young Nigerians to use their influence positively to bridge ethnic, religious, and political divides, as divisive politics could potentially derail the nation's progress.
