2027: APC, opposition clash over FG’s $1bn household palliative

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition parties have been at odds over the Federal Government's $1bn Household Prosperity and Empowerment Social Protection Project. The opposition party claims that the programme is a strategy to sway voters ahead of the 2027 general elections. The APC, however, insists that the initiative is a genuine effort by the Bola Tinubu administration to address poverty and provide long-term economic support for vulnerable Nigerians.

The programme, launched in Abuja, aims to provide immediate support during economic shocks and create pathways for households to move away from poverty. The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, unveiled the initiative and stated that the administration's reforms have made it necessary to continue supporting vulnerable Nigerians. The programme targets around 7.6 million households, with eligible beneficiaries expected to receive a one-off digital shock-response payment of N40,000.

The government argues that the programme is part of a broader social protection system designed to move Nigeria beyond short-term aid to sustainable economic empowerment.
