2025 vs. 2026 Mac Studio Buyer's Guide: All Upgrades Compared

Apple has unveiled a new Mac Studio featuring the M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips, while discontinuing the previous M4 Max and M3 Ultra models. The design remains unchanged for the fifth consecutive year, with all improvements being internal. This guide compares the upgraded models across both the Max and Ultra configurations.

The primary changes across both models include the new SSD architecture with PCIe Gen 6, supporting up to twice the read and write speeds, as well as the introduction of Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 on the Mac Studio for the first time. Additionally, the Mac Studio 2026 is made with 35% recycled content, including 100% recycled aluminum and rare earth elements in magnets.

When comparing the M4 Max to the M5 Max, the latter offers an 18-core CPU, a 614GB/s memory bandwidth upgrade, twice-fast storage, and Wi-Fi 7. The M4 Max starts at $2,499, while the M5 Max is priced at $2,699. The most significant upgrade is the CPU, with the M5 Max offering an 18-core configuration versus the M4 Max's 14-core.

In the Ultra configurations, the M3 Ultra is replaced by the M5 Ultra. The M5 Ultra features a 30-core CPU, up to a 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth, and 256GB or 512GB unified memory options. It also includes a 40-core GPU, third-generation hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and second-generation Dynamic Caching. The M3 Ultra started at $5,499, while the M5 Ultra is priced at $5,799.

The M5 Ultra's memory bandwidth increase and larger unified memory options make it more advantageous for AI-heavy workloads and large-model token generation.
