Zimbabwe arrests official after boat sinking that killed 97

Zimbabwean authorities have apprehended a district official on charges of culpable homicide following the tragic sinking of a government-operated ferry on Lake Kariba, resulting in the loss of at least 97 lives. The aging and overcrowded passenger ferry, a crucial transport route for rural regions, capsized during adverse weather conditions and turbulent waters on August 11.

Police have recovered 97 bodies, among them at least 30 young children under the age of ten. Seventy-seven individuals were fortunate enough to survive the disaster.

The vessel in question, operated by the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA), had a designated capacity of 90 passengers. The 49-year-old Kariba RIDA district coordinator who faced arrest had already been before a court, according to a statement released by the police. Lake Kariba, which spans the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, is renowned as the world's largest man-made lake by volume.
