WRC talks tomorrow aimed at resolving Oberstown dispute

Talks between the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) and opposing parties are scheduled for tomorrow in an attempt to resolve a staffing dispute at the Oberstown Children Detention Centre in Dublin. The conflict centers around the Fórsa trade union, which employs staff at the facility and has recently staged a 12-hour strike. Fórsa plans to hold a 48-hour strike starting Monday, 31 August, as a means to draw attention to the issue of safe staffing levels. This marks the fourth in a series of weekly work stoppages initiated earlier this month.

The union argues that the strikes aim to highlight concerns about adequate staffing at Oberstown. Despite the scheduled talks, Fórsa plans to proceed with their strike schedule for the following week. Oberstown, however, has welcomed the invitation to engage in dialogue through the WRC. A spokesperson for the facility expressed its commitment to working constructively with all parties involved, hoping for meaningful progress through this process.

Oberstown has acknowledged recent efforts to improve staffing levels, including the recruitment of 23 new frontline staff. This move has resulted in a 29% reduction in recorded campus incidents, decreasing from 191 year-to-date in 2025 to 136 during the corresponding period in 2026.
