Widespread damage reported at Kherson Power Plant following Russian strikes

On August 26, Ukrainian energy company Naftogaz reported that Russian guided aerial bombs had struck the Kherson Thermal Power Plant. The attack caused extensive damage to the city's primary heating infrastructure. Naftogaz experts will determine the full extent of the destruction once the security situation stabilizes. The company emphasized that the thermal power plant, a civilian facility, was targeted in an act of deliberate aggression against critical infrastructure and the civilians who rely on it.

Throughout 2026, the Kherson Thermal Power Plant has endured numerous Russian attacks, with dozens occurring during that year alone. Acting Naftogaz Chair Serhiy Fedorenko stated that the recent strike resulted in significant destruction. The company is currently coordinating with local authorities and emergency services to address the aftermath.

In December 2025, a Russian strike virtually obliterated the thermal power plant, forcing it to cease operations. Naftogaz reported that Russian forces escalated their campaign against the company's infrastructure in mid-August, launching multiple strikes targeting the same facilities daily. Since the start of 2026, Russia has launched nearly 300 attacks on Naftogaz assets.
