WeWire joins SEC sandbox to pilot tokenised trade finance

Ghana-based fintech firm WeWire has been granted entry into the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) Virtual Assets Regulatory Sandbox to test the tokenization of trade finance. The objective of this initiative is to enhance access to capital and resolve settlement complications linked to international commerce. The firm has pledged to utilize blockchain technology to construct a more transparent and effective mechanism for capital allocation and trade transaction settlement.

In a statement, WeWire's CEO, Mr. Eben Ghanney, emphasized that tokenization of trade finance could tackle numerous obstacles encountered by businesses involved in cross-border trade. He added that participating in the SEC sandbox was a testament to WeWire's dedication to creating African-developed financial technology solutions that adhere to global regulatory standards while addressing Africa-specific challenges.

Ghanney pointed out that the sandbox offers an opportunity to showcase how trade finance tokenization can diminish barriers, ease friction, and significantly decrease the expenses associated with cross-border trade. He further noted that WeWire's inclusion in the SEC Virtual Assets Regulatory Sandbox reflects the rising capability of African fintech companies to create innovative financial solutions while conforming to established regulatory frameworks.

The CEO also mentioned that WeWire has previously collaborated with the Bank of Ghana through its Regulatory Sandbox, developing compliant blockchain-based payment solutions and stablecoin liquidity rails. WeWire is one of nine companies selected by the SEC to pilot virtual asset products under the Virtual Asset Service Providers Act, 2025 (Act 1154).

Ghanney emphasized that WeWire is the sole cross-border payments company in this group. He reiterated that this experience has further solidified the company's understanding of regulatory compliance within Ghana's evolving digital finance ecosystem.
