US Suspends Visa Appointments at Several Embassies and Consulates Around the World

The United States government has temporarily halted the processing of immigrant visa applications at several of its embassies and consulates worldwide. This decision comes as officials undergo extensive training on evaluation procedures to assess applicants' financial ability to support themselves in the United States. Immigrant visa applicants scheduled for interviews were informed via email that their appointments have been rescheduled, with a new date and time to be provided in a subsequent notification.

The State Department stated that the primary goal of this pause is to ensure that visa applicants do not become a public charge, meaning they are unlikely to rely on U.S. public benefits intended for Americans in need. This move follows the revocation of approximately 200,000 tourist and business visas, as well as the implementation of a pilot program that allows visa applicants to expedite their appointments by paying an additional $750 fee at five embassies, including Bogota. However, this expedited process does not guarantee the issuance of a visa.

The decision to pause immigrant visa processing was announced shortly after U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas overturned President Donald Trump's ban on immigrant applications from 75 countries. The ban aimed to improve domestic security but faced widespread criticism from human rights organizations, who deemed it discriminatory and contrary to freedom of expression and due process guarantees. Critics argue that the ban has created an unsafe environment in the United States, particularly for ethnic minorities.

Additionally, the suspension of immigrant visa processing follows President Trump's promise to curb illegal immigration, which has resulted in increased fees for applicants seeking certain work visas.
