US strike on alleged drug-smuggling boat kills 4

On Tuesday, a US military operation codenamed Southern Spear resulted in the death of four individuals aboard a vessel believed to be involved in drug trafficking, according to officials. The strike targeted a ship operating along known narco-trafficking routes in the Caribbean, as confirmed by the US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) in a statement posted on X. The vessel was seen moving through the water in a black-and-white video shortly before an explosion occurred.

Operation Southern Spear was initiated in early September, with President Donald Trump asserting that the United States is at war with drug cartels originating from Latin America. Since the commencement of the operation, over 200 people have been killed in strikes conducted in the Caribbean Sea and Eastern Pacific Ocean, as per figures compiled by AFP.

However, it is important to note that the Trump administration has not provided conclusive evidence to substantiate their claims that the vessels targeted have been directly involved in drug trafficking activities.

Legal experts and human rights organizations argue that these strikes could potentially constitute extrajudicial killings, given the lack of definitive evidence presented by the administration to substantiate their claims.
