US pauses fresh military action against Iran, turns to sanctions and maritime pressure

The United States has decided to suspend its plans for additional military actions against Iran, instead opting to intensify its pressure through other means, including naval blockades and economic sanctions, according to reports from Axios. State Secretary Marco Rubio informed foreign ministers of allied countries about this shift in strategy, stating that the administration does not intend to carry out further military strikes "for now."

Instead, the focus will be on maintaining the flow of petroleum through the vital Strait of Hormuz, while significantly reducing Iran's ability to disrupt maritime energy flows through the strait. The US has been clearing mines from the waterway to facilitate increased tanker traffic along its southern route. This strategic shift is described as "significant" by officials, emphasizing the reduced capacity of Iran to manipulate global energy markets.

The policy is expected to remain in place at least until the November midterm elections, after which the US might consider resuming military action. Iran rejected the US strategy, calling the efforts to isolate its financial system unlawful, and global oil prices fell for the second consecutive day as traders factored in limited immediate disruption from the latest sanctions.

Iran and Oman have held talks to manage maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz, discussing a temporary navigation corridor and agreeing to jointly clear mines from the waterway.
