US-gathered evidence could strengthen OSP’s Asante Berko bribery probe – Kpebu

US gathered evidence could bolster Ghanaian bribery probe into former Tema Oil Refinery MD and Goldman Sachs banker Asante Kweku Berko, according to private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu. Speaking on JoyFM, Mr Kpebu stated that evidence previously tested in a US court provides significant weight to the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) investigation into the case.

He noted that the US evidence met the criminal standard of proof beyond reasonable doubt, suggesting it would bolster the Ghanaian investigation. Mr Kpebu acknowledged the OSP’s handling of the matter before the latest developments, criticizing the Special Prosecutor for lacking sufficient communication on the investigation. He highlighted that the US prosecution had previously secured a conviction for Berko, which could help re-energize the Ghanaian case.

Kpebu also emphasized that Berko’s cooperation could be crucial to the Ghanaian investigation, and that the Attorney General’s oversight of the case was significant. He noted that the involvement of US authorities, such as the FBI and Department of Justice, could provide useful support to Ghanaian authorities due to their prior work on the case.
