Ukraine's Zelenskyy visits troops at front

On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy paid a visit to troops stationed along the southeastern front line in Ukraine, a region where Kyiv has reported recent successes against Russian forces. During his visit, Zelenskyy awarded medals to soldiers as part of his support for the Ukrainian military. Ukraine had previously announced the retaking of approximately 26 villages across three eastern and southern regions earlier this month; however, AFP was unable to independently verify these claims.

In a post on social media, Zelenskyy shared that he was currently at the front line in the Oleksandrivsky sector, working alongside Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Mykhailo Drapatiy. The meeting aimed to discuss various issues, including the provision of drones and artillery supplies, as well as addressing issues such as desertion and the training and motivation of soldiers.

After enduring four-and-a-half years of conflict with Russia, Ukraine's army, which is outnumbered and outgunned, has faced numerous challenges, such as mass desertions and difficulties with conscription. This year, Kyiv has managed to stabilize the front, which is now dominated by swarms of drones that make rapid troop movements nearly impossible. Presently, Russia occupies nearly one-fifth of Ukraine's territory.
