TUI to ballot teachers for industrial action

The Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) is set to vote on industrial action over pay disputes with the Department of Education and Youth. The union claims the government has failed to deliver a promised 1% salary increase, which was part of Senior Cycle redevelopment measures agreed upon in May 2025. If the industrial action is approved by members, it could initially involve suspending involvement in certain practical and project-based assessments as part of the redevelopment process.

TUI President Anthony Quinn expressed disappointment in the government's breach of trust and lack of commitment to the redevelopment process. The Department of Education and Youth has acknowledged TUI's intention to ballot its members and stated it remains fully committed to the implementation of the Public Service Agreement. The Department is currently engaged in local bargaining discussions with all relevant stakeholders, and any further comments on the ballot would be inappropriate at this stage due to the confidential nature of the negotiations.
