Tongue says Root's message hit home as England eye series win

England will aim to secure their first test series victory in almost two years and refocus on cricket when they face Pakistan in the second test at Lord’s, commencing on Thursday. Joe Root, who started his second stint as test captain after a dominant victory in the first test, was visibly frustrated following another disciplinary breach involving fast bowler Brydon Carse.

The incident, which saw Carse arrested outside a nightclub in Derby, led to his exclusion from the squad for the second test. Josh Tongue, a 28-year-old fast bowler, stated that Root's stern talk had been well-received by the players. "It was a chat that was needed, a very good chat from Rooty," Tongue remarked. "He's been around the England dressing room for plenty of years now, he knows what it takes to be the top professional and I think we’ve just got to do the best we can moving forward."

England's recent record, marked by off-field indiscretions, includes a £30,000 fine for fast bowling captain Harry Brook for an altercation with a bouncer in Wellington, and instances of curfew violations by Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson. Victory at Lord’s would help shift the focus back to cricket and England are expected to field an unchanged team.

Tongue and Ollie Robinson were the standout performers in the first test as Pakistan's batting faltered. Root is aware of the potential of Pakistan's team but believes his side will not underestimate them, especially since the Lord’s match is known for raising the game of both teams.
