Tim Curry, star of 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show,' dies at 80

British actor Tim Curry passed away on Tuesday night at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 80, as reported by TMZ. The actor had largely withdrawn from public life following a stroke in 2012, which led to a series of health issues that further compromised his condition. Curry was renowned for his distinctive voice and exceptional skill in controlling and animating every muscle in his face.

He rose to international fame as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 1975 cult classic, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Curry originally played the character in the original stage production at London’s Royal Court Theatre and continued to portray him throughout the musical's West End, Broadway, and film adaptations. The character, a cross-dressing transvestite, became a cultural icon of the 1970s, representing sexual freedom and transgression.

Curry's performance in Frank-N-Furter helped revive the corset as an everyday garment. Born in Grappenhall in 1946, Curry began his professional career in the original West End production of Hair at the age of 22. He met the writer of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Richard O’Brien, shortly after graduating from the University of Birmingham, which proved to be a fortuitous encounter.

O’Brien had initially written Frank-N-Furter as a German scientist, but Curry transformed the character into a corset-and-fishnet-clad transvestite with an unmistakably feminine voice. Following the success of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Curry pursued a balanced career on stage and screen, eventually settling in Los Angeles. In addition to his professional work, Curry devoted himself to gardening.

He received three Tony Award nominations for his theatrical achievements, including roles in Amadeus, My Favorite Year, and Monty Python's Spamalot. Curry also appeared in various films such as Muppet Treasure Island, Clue, Kinsey, Home Alone 2, Annie, The Three Musketeers, The Hunt for Red October, Scary Movie 2, Congo, and Charlie’s Angels.

His voice lent itself well to numerous animated television series. Curry's iconic portrayal of Frank-N-Furter helped shape the cultural landscape of the 1970s, emphasizing the importance of self-discovery and nonconformity.
