Three-year-old boy dies after fire in Mwingi rental house

A three-and-a-half-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries after a fire ignited in his mother's rented house in Kwa Mashariki area, Mwingi Central Sub-County, Kitui County. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, August 25, at around 9:36 PM. Police were promptly notified of the fire, which had spread to one room of the two-roomed rental apartment.

Upon investigation, officers discovered that a bed, mattress, and other bedding had been consumed by the flames. According to the boy's mother, she had left the child alone while she went out around 2 PM; upon her return at 5 PM, she found the room in distress, with the boy unconscious on a spare mattress. Emergency services rushed the child to Mwingi Medicare Hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Medical examiners suspect the boy's death might have been caused by suffocation due to smoke inhalation. The investigation is ongoing, and the cause of the fire and the value of the destroyed property remain undetermined. Meanwhile, another unfortunate event took place in Msambweni Sub-County, Kwale County, where an unidentified eight-year-old boy's body was recovered from Mwachema River.

The body was discovered around 5 PM by a man who encountered women fishing along the riverbank. The body, which showed no visible injuries, was taken to Msambweni Sub-County Hospital mortuary for preservation until an autopsy could be conducted. Authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the boy's death and working to identify his family.

Additionally, in Lagbadana Village, Tana River County, the remains of an 11-year-old boy were found during a search for a missing child who had gone grazing goats on August 18. The dismembered and burnt remains were discovered beneath tree roots in a dry riverbed. Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the boy's disappearance and the origin of the burnt remains.
