‘Tax compliance vital for infrastructure, social services’

Nigerian lawyers have emphasized the critical role of taxation in funding infrastructure development and social services, supporting efforts to encourage voluntary tax compliance. This emphasis was highlighted during a panel discussion titled "Pay Now, Prosper Later" at the Nigerian Bar Association's 66th Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt.

Tax authorities are working to strengthen trust between taxpayers and tax enforcement bodies, believing this will lead to increased voluntary compliance and higher tax revenues. The Office of the Tax Ombud, an independent platform for taxpayers to lodge complaints and seek resolution, aims to alleviate administrative burdens and foster a more trustworthy tax system.

Since its launch, the Office has already received and resolved 14 out of 22 complaints, demonstrating its commitment to early dispute resolution and public awareness. Nigerians are encouraged to contact the Office for assistance or to report tax-related issues.
