SEC, Big Ten Take A Stand On Pros Returning To College

On Tuesday, the SEC and the Big Ten took a firm stance on players who have played in professional leagues returning to college sports. Both conferences unanimously rejected the idea, with the SEC subsequently making their stance even stronger by applying the same rule to the NBA, WNBA, and potentially other professional sports. Commissioner Greg Sankey of the SEC was granted the authority to enforce this rule with severe penalties.

The rule is not limited to the major leagues; professional athletes on developmental leagues like the G League are also included. Furthermore, no one who has been on a professional roster is eligible to return to an SEC school. This decision is likely directed at LSU, home to basketball coach Will Wade and football coach Lane Kiffin, both known for their relaxed approach to traditional norms and evident interest in recruiting professional athletes.

RJ Luis, a player who had previously been under contract with the Utah Jazz and Boston Celtics, was granted an injunction to play for Wade at LSU, despite this new rule. While the SEC may not be able to prevent such players from attending, if LSU faces significant financial repercussions due to the rule, the school may reconsider its coach, with the vote on this matter being 16-0 in favor of the ban.

The Big Ten's penalties for violating the rule are severe: a program could lose up to 20% of its budget, and the coach will be suspended for half of the team's schedule. While the exact penalty structure of the SEC has not been announced, it is unlikely to be any less stringent. The ACC and Big 12 are also moving to adopt similar policies, with the ACC meeting on Wednesday to discuss the issue.

If all players with a professional history, including those from Europe or the U.S., are included under this new rule, Wade at LSU would have to rebuild his roster from scratch. With only four potential players left – Divine Ugochukwu, Mouhamed Dioubate, Abdi Bashir, and Austin Nunez – it will be challenging for Wade to form a competitive team by the time practice begins, just over a month away.
