Russian attack on Chernihiv kills two, including four-year-old girl

On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, the City Council of Chernihiv declared a Day of Mourning in honor of those killed in a Russian attack. The assault, which occurred that night, resulted in the deaths of a 4-year-old child and a 49-year-old woman, according to preliminary reports. The decree was announced via Telegram.

To pay respects to the fallen, the state flag of Ukraine with a black ribbon will be flown at half-mast on various structures, including government buildings, local administrations, businesses, institutions, and organizations. Entertainment and concert events, as well as music broadcasts in markets, commercial areas, eateries, and public transit, are also banned on this somber day.

Prior to the attack, Chernihiv had been struck by enemy forces, causing a residential building to catch fire and burn extensively. Three individuals were present in the house during the strike; a 14-year-old girl was taken to the hospital. Firefighters discovered the bodies of the deceased woman and child in the aftermath of the search.
