Reports: CIA Chief Warned Russia Against NATO Attack and Aid to Iran

CIA Director John Ratcliffe embarked on a clandestine visit to Moscow on August 25, 2026, marking his first known trip to Russia since taking office. According to The Wall Street Journal, Ratcliffe's mission was to dissuade Russia from launching an attack on NATO countries. The information was derived from US intelligence reports suggesting Russia was gearing up for a military mobilization against Ukraine, indicating potential threats to NATO allies.

Specifically, Ratcliffe cautioned Russian officials against escalating tensions with the Baltic states, notably Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Intelligence assessments suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin might consider limited military actions against NATO countries in the future, ranging from cyberattacks to small-scale land invasions.

Additionally, Ratcliffe expressed concerns over Russia's military and economic support for Iran. The Kremlin acknowledged the visit, describing it as a routine security interaction. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov mentioned that Ratcliffe did not meet with President Putin, though Putin was briefed on the outcome. The US informed Ukraine about a senior American delegation's pending arrival in Moscow, requesting Ukraine to halt strikes on Russia until the delegation departed.

Interestingly, there were no Ukrainian drone strikes on Moscow during Ratcliffe's visit. This event echoes a similar visit by CIA Director William Burns in November 2021, who also warned Russia against invading Ukraine. Despite Russia's assurances of no invasion plans, Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine three months later.
