Record 17-gold Sukma haul shows Perlis sports development on right track, says MB

Kangar, Aug 26 — The remarkable performance of the Perlis contingent at the Malaysia Games (Sukma 2026) hosted by Selangor is a testament to the state's successful sports development, according to Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah. With a record 17 gold medals, the achievement sets a new benchmark in the history of Perlis' participation in Sukma.

Abu Bakar emphasized that the continuous efforts of the state government, athletes, coaches, sports associations, and the State Sports Council have led to these positive results. Among the notable accomplishments were Perlis athletes breaking the games' record in the shot put event and the state's weightlifting team emerging as the overall champion at Sukma Selangor 2026.

In a press conference after chairing the Exco Meeting at Kompleks Seri Putra, Abu Bakar reiterated the state's commitment to talent development, high-performance training programs, coaching, sports science, facilities, and athletes' welfare to further enhance future performances. Perlis secured a total of 42 medals in the 2026 Sukma games, comprising 17 gold, seven silver, and 18 bronze medals.

The state government is also in discussions regarding incentives for the successful athletes, with a presentation ceremony planned post the conclusion of Para Sukma Selangor 2026.
